Why Does My Friend Lie About Things That Don't Even Matter?
Humans are psychologically wired to lie before they're wired to explain themselves. It's not always about the big cover up. Small pointless lies happen because of: 1) impression management, protecting a version of themselves that never slips 2) loss aversion, one small awkward moment feels bigger in their head than it actually is 3) cognitive ease, lying is just faster than justifying the truth. Most lies aren't hiding something big. They're avoiding something small and calling it big.
What's actually happening
Small lie slips out over nothing
No one checks, nothing happens
Brain files it as safe and easy
Becomes their default under any pressure
What the lie actually protected
Some people lie so automatically they've stopped noticing the truth was ever an option.
