Why Does the Loan Officer Only Talk About the Monthly Payment?
The human brain is terrible at multiplying and extremely comfortable with small numbers. Every conversation stays on the monthly figure because of: 1) mental accounting, a payment and a total get filed in different pockets in your head and only one of them feels affordable 2) hyperbolic discounting, cost that arrives later barely registers as cost at all 3) the framing effect, because a longer term gets presented as affordability when what it actually is, is more interest. There are two numbers. Ask for the one nobody is saying.
What it is costing you
Monthly feels small by design
The total lives somewhere else
Longer term means more interest
Ask what it costs finished
The real comparison
Ask what the whole thing costs by the end. Watch the calculator come out.
