Why Do Clients Judge My Skills Based on How I Look Before I Even Speak?
Humans are biologically wired to judge you in under a second, before your skills ever get a chance to speak. It happens because of: 1) thin-slicing, the brain makes snap verdicts from tiny bits of info to save energy 2) the halo effect, one trait like grooming or posture gets assumed to predict everything else, including whether you're good at your job 3) status signaling, people read your presentation as a shortcut for your price and your standards. Nobody's waiting to hear you're good, they've already decided, you're just fighting to prove them wrong.
What's actually happening
You walk in, they scan you fast
Brain fills in the blanks instantly
That guess becomes their starting price
You spend the meeting undoing it
Myth vs Reality
Myth
Good work speaks for itself once they see it
Reality
They already priced you before you opened your mouth
Nobody agrees how much of this is fair judgment versus lazy stereotyping, not even the people doing it.
