Why Does Your Mechanic Keep Changing His Story?
Human deception is goal directed, not random, by evolutionary design. People lie to gain, preserve, hide, or avoid something specific, never just for fun. It happens because of: 1) self serving bias, they'll bend facts to protect their own ego or reputation first 2) loss aversion, avoiding blame or a financial hit matters more to them than the truth 3) impression management, they're managing how you see them, not managing reality. Stop asking if they're lying. Ask what they're protecting.

How the lie actually gets built
Knowing what they're hiding doesn't always tell you how far the lie actually goes.
