Why Does Everyone Want to Know How Much You Charge?
People are biologically wired to use other people as a measuring stick, they can't help it. They ask what you charge because of: 1) social comparison theory, they need a number to measure their own worth or price against 2) anchoring, whatever you say first becomes the number they negotiate down from 3) plain scarcity thinking, if you're cheap they wonder what's wrong with you, if you're not they wonder if they're getting played. Never give a number without knowing why they're asking first.
Why they're really asking
Casual question drops mid conversation or job
Your number becomes their negotiating anchor
They compare you to three other quotes
You lose leverage the second you answer
Myth vs Reality
Myth
They're just curious or making conversation
Reality
They're calibrating what they can talk you down to
You still don't know if they're pricing you out or pricing themselves in.
