Power in any small group goes to whoever shows up, not to whoever is right. One person ends up running it because of: 1) diffusion of responsibility, since everybody else has a life and nobody else wants the meeting 2) the availability heuristic, because his opinion is the only one anyone has actually heard, so it starts reading as the consensus 3) the status quo bias, since an unopposed decision becomes policy purely by never being challenged. Attendance is the whole qualification. That cuts both ways.

Show up one time and count how thin the actual support is.

Why Does Someone Go Silent Instead of Telling You What Is Wrong?

Silence is a message with no fingerprints on it, which is the entire reason people reach for it. The quiet happens because of: 1) plausible deniability, since nothing was said, so nothing can ever be quoted back at them 2) negative reinforcement, because going quiet has reliably made you come and find them, and that worked every time 3) conflict avoidance, since saying the actual thing risks a conversation they do not know how to win. You can answer a sentence. You cannot answer a vacuum, and that is the design.

Say you are here when they want to talk, then genuinely stop guessing.

Why Do People Get Offended When You Set a Boundary?

A boundary takes something away from somebody, and losses register in the brain as attacks. The reaction arrives because of: 1) loss aversion, since access they used to have for free suddenly carries a price 2) reactance, because being told no triggers a push against the limit itself, completely separate from whatever the limit is about 3) the first reaction being a test, since a new rule gets checked for whether it is real before it gets accepted. The offense is not evidence you were wrong. It is evidence the boundary changed something.

Hold it one time without explaining and watch what the second reaction is.

Why Does the Warranty Always Come Up at the End?

Decision fatigue is not a side effect of a long sale. It is the schedule. The extra coverage waits until the end because of: 1) decision fatigue, since by the final page you will agree to nearly anything to be finished and out of the chair 2) the contrast effect, because a few dollars a month sitting next to a number that large reads as basically nothing 3) fear framing, since everything you just bought is now something you could lose. Anything offered last was placed last on purpose.

The blame lands on you because of: 1) the recency effect, since the last thing that happened is what gets filed as the event 2) the peak end rule, because whoever lost composure last owns the memory of the whole thing 3) reputational momentum, since the person with the longer record of looking calm gets the benefit of the doubt automatically, without anybody deciding to give it. Reacting last is how you get named first. That is worth knowing before you react.
